Seminar on the topic: "Artificial Intelligence in GIS"

As part of the week of the cyclical commission of land management disciplines on March 12, 2024, a teacher of land management disciplines Oleg KACHANOVSKYY held a seminar on the topic "Artificial Internet in geographic information systems» for students of specialty 193 "Geodesy and Land Management".

The event took the form of a detailed conversation.

Oleg Igorovich began his report by saying that artificial intelligence has ceased to be “boring” and has become widely used in business. A survey by the McKinsey Global Institute showed that in 2022, 50% companies around the world tried to use artificial intelligence in some way, compared to only 20% in 2017. Today, specialists in this field are in demand on the labor market. Thus, according to PitchBook, over the past 12 months, large American companies from the S&P 500 index have acquired 52 artificial intelligence startups. PredictLeads data shows that the same group of companies published approximately 7 thousand job advertisements for experts in artificial intelligence and machine learning every month. And this is 10 times more often than in the first quarter of 2020.

The main known artificial intelligence tools today are Gmail from Google, Open AI from Midjourney, GPT-3, Copilot on GitHub, Microsoft platform. The advantages of artificial intelligence are that it can extract, process and generate a large amount of information. Thanks to this, GIS specialists began to use it in their activities, to create various thematic maps, conduct research in the field of land management, ecology and photogrammetry.

Oleg Kachanovsky demonstrated in real time the capabilities of AI in solving simple geodetic tasks.

In addition, artificial intelligence congratulated everyone on Land Surveyor's Day in the form of a musical greeting and composed a funny description of a specialist in geodesy and land management.

So, AI is becoming more and more familiar and widespread for all of us, so the ability to use such tools is becoming relevant and important for a future specialist in the field of geodesy and land management.
