The future of the Earth is in danger! April 22 – International Earth Day

Annually April 22 is noted International Earth Day, which marks the beginning of the modern environmental movement. More than 1 billion people living in 192 countries of the world participate in Earth Day events, making this day the largest civic holiday in the world. The purpose of celebrating the day is to draw public attention to the existing problems of our planet. The Earth's resources must be preserved in order to pass them on to future generations.

Many environmental events are held on April 22. The first environmental action took place on this day in 1970. US Senator Gaylord Nelson called for the creation of a day that would draw public attention to environmental problems. In the past, Nelson had witnessed a large oil spill in a reservoir. He gathered a group of enterprising students and organized the first environmental demonstration. This day has become very popular in the USA.

Since 1990, Earth Day has received international status, and has been celebrated in Ukraine since 1992. It is believed that today everyone should do something useful for the Earth: clean up a littered area, plant a tree, or give up using a car for at least a day.

On International Earth Day, the Peace Bell traditionally rings in different countries, calling on the people of the Earth to feel a global community and make efforts to protect peace on the planet and preserve the beauty of our common home. The Peace Bell is a symbol of peace, peaceful life and friendship, eternal brotherhood and solidarity of peoples. And at the same time, it is a call to action in the name of preserving peace and life on Earth. The inscription on the Bell says: "Let there be common peace in the whole world."

For Ukraine, today, more than ever, the issues of peace, protection of its land, its people, and the environment, which are suffering from Russian occupiers, are more relevant than ever.

More than 30 % of Ukraine's territory is mined. Almost a third of forests have been affected by hostilities and munitions explosions. The air is polluted. The soil is destroyed. Water resources are subject to a complex negative impact. Animals are dying, plants are disappearing. The damage caused by the war to the environment is catastrophic!

Environmental damage as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian war exceeded 2.4 trillion hryvnias.

Russia is committing environmental crimes and violating the right to a safe environment for the life and health of not only the citizens of Ukraine, but also the entire world. Planet Earth is one for all!

The library and information center has prepared a eco-exhibition "The Future of the Earth is in Danger!", the purpose of which is to draw visitors' attention to the need for a reasonable, careful attitude towards wildlife and personal responsibility for the fate of the Earth.

We will definitely save our home, drive the enemy out of it, and begin to restore the rich Ukrainian nature! Everything will be Ukraine!
