National University of Life
and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine"
On March 26, 2025, teachers and students of the educational program "Geodesy and Land Management" took part in the scientific and practical seminar "Theoretical and practical aspects of using satellite observations to assess crop areas" which was held within the framework of the discussion platform "Science for Restoration and Sustainable Development". The speaker of this event was Dr. Serhiy Skakun, professor in the Department of Geographic Sciences at the University of Maryland (UMD), specialist in the field of Remote Sensing, geoinformatics, manager of numerous NASA projects, graduate of NTUU “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”.
In the report Serhiy Skakun spoke in detail about modern methods of estimating sown areas, which is an important component of agricultural monitoring. Conducted an assessment and forecast of crop production in recent years. The report proposed a theoretical basis for estimating sown areas based on a stratified random sample, when information layers are obtained from satellite cartographic materials. The impact of the quality of satellite images on the efficiency and accuracy of area estimation was also demonstrated. Practical examples of estimating sown areas in Ukraine were given.
The knowledge gained will be used by teachers and students during classes in the following educational components: "Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing", "Teaching Practice in Geoinformatics", and during the preparation of final qualification papers.
