On April 30, 2025, teachers and students of the educational program "Geodesy and Land Management" took part in a scientific lecture on the topic "Computer Vision Methods for Land Use and Climate Analysis", which was held on the discussion platform of the National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute".
Lecturer: Leonid Shumilo, PhD candidate at the University of Maryland (USA), specialist in neural networks in the field of artificial intelligence and satellite monitoring.
The focus of the discussion was on modern approaches to monitoring land cover changes and climate impacts on agriculture using neural networks and computer vision methods, in particular Optical Flow. Leonid presented research on estimating climate velocity, analyzing species migration, and modeling the expansion of winter crops, such as wheat, in response to temperature changes.
The meeting participants learned about the use of climate analogs, multidimensional models, and the potential of neural networks to predict crop movements based on historical data. In particular, it was shown how climate change is causing wheat crops to shift to northern latitudes, and which regions have the highest risks of crop losses both in Ukraine and in the world.
