On April 23, the world celebrates World Book and Copyright Day – a celebration of authors, publishers, critics, librarians, readers and everyone who sometimes remains “behind the scenes” of book publishing. Why April 23 and why it is so important to introduce such a day at the global level…
The official document of UNESCO, which introduced this holiday by Resolution No. 3.18 at the XXVIII session on November 15, 1995, states the following wording: "The General Conference … proclaims April 23 as “World Book and Copyright Day,” because it was on this day in 1616 that Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega".
World Book and Copyright Day has been celebrated annually since 1996. Given that "in the historical sense, the book is the most powerful factor in the dissemination of knowledge and the most reliable means of its preservation", World Book Day is designed to emphasize the fundamental importance of books and their irreplaceability in the information society. One of its main goals is to promote reading and book publishing, draw attention to the culture of the written word, as well as to issues of copyright and intellectual property protection.
It is believed that Book Day was noted in the first half XX centuryThe idea for its creation belongs to a writer and editor from Valencia. Vicente Clavel AndresIn 1926, King Alfonso XIII of Spain considered his proposal and signed a royal decree establishing October 7 (believed to be Cervantes's birthday) as Spanish Book Day. In 1930, Book Day in Spain was moved to April 23, the date the writer probably died.
A feature of the introduction of such a day at the global level is the awareness of the book as a powerful weapon in establishing peace and eliminating social problems: a book, embodying a person's creative impulses and their desire to share their own ideas and achievements with the world, should promote dialogue, mutual understanding and tolerance. In addition, UNESCO, within the framework of World Book and Copyright Day, advocates for providing equal access to knowledge and increasing the literacy of the population. Another important aspect is the awareness of the value of books and their irreplaceability in spreading knowledge and shaping culture, regardless of the form of information presentation.
UNESCO has named Rio de Janeiro the World Book Capital for 2025 in recognition of its literary and artistic traditions.
Celebrate this day by purchasing a book and supporting a Ukrainian publisher or, for example, by replacing watching TV with reading.
