Every year, Ukraine hosts the international campaign "16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence" from November 25 to December 10. Its main goal is to draw public attention to the problems of overcoming domestic violence, gender-based violence, child abuse, and combating human trafficking.
All-Ukrainian campaign "16 days against violence» covers the following important dates:
- November 25 – International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women;
- December 1 – World AIDS Day;
- December 2 – International Day for the Abolition of Slavery;
- December 3 – International Day of Persons with Disabilities;
- December 5 – International Volunteer Day;
- December 6 – Commemoration of the students shot in Montreal;
- December 10 is International Human Rights Day.
December 3rd is celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities – a date that reminds us of how important equal rights, dignity, and opportunities are for every person, regardless of physical or mental characteristics.
Why is this day important?
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is not just an opportunity to honor those who overcome daily challenges, but also an opportunity for each of us to reflect on how we can make the world more inclusive and open to all. In a barrier-free society, every person has the chance to realize their potential, regardless of their limitations. This is not only a matter of justice, but also the basis for creating a healthy, tolerant and cohesive world. The lives of people with disabilities are often full of examples of resilience, inspiration and struggle. They not only overcome physical or social barriers, but also demonstrate that dreams and goals are achievable for everyone.
Among those who inspire with their strength of spirit and achievements, it is worth mentioning the outstanding Ukrainian athletes, heroes of our time, who were present at the creative event. Judoist Anastasia Garnyk became the gold medalist of the 2024 Paralympic Games. These were her second Games, and after a failure in 2020, when she took fifth place, Anastasia came back stronger, proving to herself and the whole world that perseverance and self-belief can work miracles.
Another example is Honored Master of Sports of Ukraine Ivan Sivak, who won three gold medals at the Wheelchair Dance World Cup for the third time. His performances are not only about sports, but also about art, aesthetics, and the beauty of movement, which know no limits.
The words of such people sound powerful and inspiring: “It doesn’t matter how much you have lost, what matters is how you use it to become stronger,” says Anastasia Garnyk. “Dance is a language that everyone understands. It unites, inspires and gives faith that the beauty is in our movement – within us,” notes Ivan Sivak.
One of the central elements of the event were performances by art groups, which include both children and adults. This is a vivid example of how creativity unites people, destroys stereotypes and gives joy. These performances not only show talent and self-expression, but also prove that art is a universal language that knows no boundaries.
Creating a barrier-free society is not just a task for governments or civil society organizations; each of us can make a contribution.
