To the 180th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Pulyuy

February 2, 2025 marks the 180th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Puliuy, a great Ukrainian scientist and public figure, one of the most famous Ukrainians in the world. Ivan Pavlovich Puliuy (1845-1918) was a physicist and electrical engineer, the author of about 50 scientific works, primarily on the problems of cathode radiation and X-rays, electrical engineering and electric power engineering.

I.P. Puliuy was born in the town of Hrymailiv in the Ternopil region. After graduating from the Ternopil Gymnasium, he continued his studies at the University of Vienna, and received a doctorate in natural philosophy from the University of Strasbourg.

The question of the discovery of X-rays remains controversial to this day, and while Wilhelm Roentgen is known to the whole world, the name of Ivan Pulyuy has only recently become known to the general public. However, 14 years before V. Roentgen, I.P. Pulyuy designed a tube that later became the prototype of modern X-ray machines.

I.P. Pulyuy analyzed the nature and mechanisms of X-rays (later they were called X-rays) much more deeply than V. Roentgen, and also demonstrated their properties. I.P. Pulyuy was one of the first to begin designing and manufacturing vacuum devices. The fluorescent gas-discharge lamp became widely known, which went down in the history of technology as the “Pulyuy lamp”. X-ray images made by Pulyuy using this lamp were most often reproduced in European popular science publications as unsurpassed in quality for illustrating the use of X-rays in medicine.

Another of the scientist's developments is a patented invention that made it possible to use an alternating current transmission line for simultaneous telephone communication.

The name of I.P. Puliuy is given to the Ternopil National Technical University. In the Ternopil region, 2025 has been declared the year of Ivan Puliuy. The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine established the Ivan Puliuy Prize for outstanding work in the field of applied physics. We do not have many creators of such magnitude in Ukrainian history as Ivan Puliuy. The rays of our outstanding countryman have penetrated from the century before last to the present day and continue to faithfully serve human civilization.
