Thematic meeting "Waste disposal in the EU countries and Ukraine: upcycling, recycling, freecycling"

The problem of waste disposal is one of the most pressing environmental and social problems of our time. Billions of tons of waste are generated worldwide every year, a significant part of which is not properly disposed of, which has serious consequences for the environment, human health and the economy.

How to dispose of waste? - 2nd-year students of the specialty "Geodesy and Land Management" and members of the ecological circle "Source" learned at the thematic meeting "Waste Disposal in EU Countries and Ukraine: Upcycling, Recycling, Freecycling" at the Rivne Regional Universal Scientific Library, which took place on November 19, 2024.

Event speaker Anastasia MELNYK-MANKOVSKA – designer, environmentalist and upcycler.

Waste disposal is a set of measures aimed at the reuse or safe recycling of waste in order to minimize its negative impact on the environment and increase the efficiency of resource use. Given the global environmental challenges, disposal is an important element of sustainable development. This is how Ms. Anastasia began her speech.

The speaker focused in detail on waste recycling methods - upcycling and recycling. Upcycling – it’s not just recycling old things, but making new ones out of them, and recycling multiple use of resources through complete recycling of waste from raw material to finished product. Freecycling – a new type of handling of unnecessary things and objects, which consists in giving away unnecessary things or exchanging them for something else. All three methods promote a completely different concept of waste recycling, the speaker noted.

During the meeting, participants learned where upcycling came from and how it can help the city, community, and even local businesses. Ms. Anastasia used examples to prove that upcycling is not only environmentally friendly and economical, but also beautiful.

Special attention in the conversation was paid to the method of waste processing - recycling. One of the main types of waste for recycling is plastic, which poses a great threat to nature. The speaker focused on sorting, recycling in the EU countries and in Ukraine, labeling and secondary use of plastic.

They talked about a waste disposal method called incineration, which scientists consider harmful to the environment because it increases carbon dioxide emissions into the air.

The topic of war was touched upon, as it brings destruction and a lot of construction waste appears. How can it be used in peacetime, the ecologist told.

During the discussion, all participants of the meeting noted that we need to start taking care of a clean environment now, and start with ourselves, that is, sorting garbage at home, handing it over to collection points for further recycling. We must do all this in order to breathe clean air, consume clean products, and use clean soil and water bodies.
