November 20, 2024 within the framework of GIS Day An interactive game in the form of a quest on the topic "On the Paths of the Old City" was held among students of specialty 193 "Geodesy and Land Management" within the discipline "GIS in Cadastral Systems" and "Photogrammetry". The organizer of the event was Oleg KACHANOVSKY, a teacher of land management disciplines.
The history of the city always hides interesting secrets that are worth revealing in order to better understand its past, form a connection with the present, and dream about the future. This is the idea behind the interactive game-quest "On the Paths of the Old City", which is dedicated to creating a historical interactive map of Rivne.
This quest is not only fun, but also a unique educational initiative that aims to restore the image of the city of Rivne in the 1930s using planning and cartographic materials of that time. Using modern geographic information systems (GIS) technologies, participants were able to:
- Feel themselves as researchers of history: immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the interwar period and see what the city looked like almost 100 years ago;
- Learn work with historical maps: understand how to georeference old materials and integrate them into modern GIS systems;
- Promote preservation of historical heritage: help create a holistic interactive map that will be useful for both scientists and the public.
Game participants received specially designed tasks covering various aspects of the city's history and topography:
- search for points on the map that correspond to modern and ancient locations;
- identification of buildings, streets or squares that have disappeared or changed their appearance;
- creating your own interactive map layers using geographic information software.
The game combined elements of entertainment, teamwork, and research. Participants not only delved into the past, but also gained practical GIS skills, which are extremely relevant in today's digital world.
Modern geographic information systems have made it possible not only to visualize historical data, but also to analyze changes in the urban structure. With the help of GIS, the participants of the game:
- investigated changes in city planning, disappeared areas or buildings;
- created an open interactive database for further use in educational, scientific or cultural projects.
The map created by the quest participants can become a unique resource for the city, allowing every resident or guest of Rivne to take a virtual journey into the past, see how the city has changed, and feel its historical atmosphere.
In addition, the project will contribute to the popularization of modern technologies among young people and their involvement in important social initiatives.
The motto of the event is – join the game-quest “On the Paths of the Old City” and become part of the team that preserves history with the help of modern technologies!
